Election Analysis:  10 Days Out

October 26, 2008
By Rob @ 3:06 p.m.
This presidential election has come down to seven states, all of which voted for Georgia Bush in 2004:  Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada.  Of these, McCain can only lose Nevada or New Mexico or Colorado.  Not all three, and not any other state on the list.

Assume Democrat Barack Obama will win all of the states that John Kerry won in 2004, plus Iowa, where Obama has shown a consistent lead in the polls for a year.  Obama is well known in Iowa, won the Iowa caucuses convicingly and has a proven campaign operation.  McCain has never faired well in a the Iowa caucuses, placing 5th in the 2000 campaign and fourth behind Fred Thompson in 2008.  The Kerry 2004 states plus Iowa gives Obama a base in the Electoral College of 259 votes, with 270 needed to win.  Assuming John McCain will automatically win every remaining state other than the 7 toss-ups, McCain starts with a base electoral vote of just 185.  Obama has both an "eastern" and "western" path to the White House, with several options along the way.  McCain's task is entirely different.  The GOP nominee can lose only one small state and still prevent defeat.
Eastern Strategy: Any One Will Do
Starting with 259 electoral votes, Obama needs to win only one of the toss-up states that is east of the Mississippi River:  Virginia (13 electoral votes) or North Carolina (15) or Florida (27) or Ohio (20).  Any of those states have enough electoral votes to put Obama over the top.  Polls in Florida and Virginia close at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on election day.  Ohio polls close at 7:30 p.m. EST and North Carolina polls are open until 8:30 p.m. EST.

Virginia may vote for a Democrat for the first time since Lyndon Johnson's election in 1964.  Johnson's son-in-law Sen. Chuck Robb kept the Democrat brand name alive in Virginia during the Reagan era, and the state turned a corner with the election of the first governor of African American descent in the United States since Reconstruction, Douglas Wilder, in 1989.  Since then, Democrats have improved their standing in the state, with popular ex-governor Mark Warner about to capture the Virginia Senate seat held by Republican John Warner for over 20 years.  Virginia's other Senate seat is also held by a Democrat, Jim Webb, who upset the GOP incumbent in 2006.  Mark Warner's successor, Democrat Tim Kaine, was an early supporter of Barack Obama and is working hard to deliver his state for the Democrats in November.  Most polls show Virginia supporting Obama by margins between 1 and 12 percent in the last month, with one poll giving McCain a 1 percent lead Voter registration is up 400,000 this year, primarily in Democratic areas, and Obama has 51 field offices operating in the state, while McCain has 19.  If Obama wins Virginia, which appears likely, it will probably be over for McCain.  If McCain hangs on in Virginia, he is doing better than expected and the race turns to Florida, where polls show a back-and-forth race, and Ohio, where recent polls give Obama a slight edge. Early voting in Ohio appears to favor Obama, and in North Carolina, of almost one million early voters, 56% are Democrats with only 27% Republican.

Western Strategy:  Best Two Out Of Three
If Obama loses all of the Eastern toss-up states, he can still win the election.  Of the three western states in play, Colorado (9) plus either Nevada (5) or New Mexico (5) gets Obama to 273 electoral votes and the White House.  Winning just Nevada and New Mexico guarantees Obama at least a tie with 269 electoral votes, in which case the new President would be chosen by the House of Representatives, and the new Vice President chosen by the Senate.  If Obama wins only Nevada or New Mexico or Colorado, and no other toss-up states, McCain wins with either 270 or 274 electoral votes.  Polls close at 9:00 p.m. EST in Colorado and New Mexico, while Nevada polls are open until 10:00 p.m. EST

Palin Goes Rogue

October 25, 2008
By Rob @ 12:21 a.m.
Reports are surfacing that GOP vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin is "going rogue," ignoring the advice of her campaign handlers and complaining that the McCain campaign has mismanaged her public image.  Palin supporters fear this is the beginning of internal GOP attempts to deflect blame away from McCain's aides and pin an election loss squarely on the Alaska governor.  With polls showing a likely Obama win, the finger pointing has already begun.

Why Are They In Iowa?
October 25, 2008
By Rob @ 12:01 p.m.
With 10 days to go before the election, GOP candidates John McCain and Sarah Palin will both be visiting Iowa this weekend, a state the Republicans have virtually no chance of winning.  The Democratic ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden is beating Palin and John McCain by 8 to 16 percent in various polls over the last month.  No major poll has put the Republicans ahead in Iowa for nearly a year.  McCain did not compete in the Iowa caucuses this year, and has never had a good relationship with GOP voters in the state.  Iowa has 7 electoral votes, compared with hotly contested states like Virginia with 13 electoral votes, North Carolina which has 15, and Florida with a whopping 27.  Polls in those three states show the race is tight.  Why would they focus on a smaller state that is far less likely to go with the GOP, unless Palin is trying to raise her profile among Iowa Republicans in anticipation of a 2012 run for the White House?  Palin is seeking to improve her image among Iowa's GOP activist in order to salvage her own presidential ambitions.

Economic meltdown puts McCain campaign in crisis mode

October 2, 2008

By Rob @ 11:14 a.m.  With just 33 days until the election, new national polls show Barack Obama slowly pulling away from John McCain in the presidential contest.   After the GOP convention, McCain held a narrow lead in most polls, but then the economy seemed to collapse in front of everyone's eyes, followed by the first presidential debate.  Since then, Obama's lead over McCain has steadily increased to as much as nine percent in a new CBS News poll. McCain and President Bush went overnight from telling America the economy was "fundamentally sound" to needing an immediate emergency rescue plan costing $700 billion.  McCain responded to the emergency by "suspending his campaign,"  famously cancelled his appearance on the David Letterman show claiming he had to get to Washington immediately, only to linger in New York until the next day.  Then, a Congressional compromise on the rescue plan fell apart after House Republicans voted overwhelmingly against the bill.  The GOP leadership blamed a speech by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi
, which criticized Bush Administration policies McCain's leadership looks like a flop, and he now supports new economic regulations after tearing down such regulations for the last 20 years.  Voters have reacted, and the implications for a McCain victory are ominous.  McCain's lead in polls from Ohio, Florida and North Carolina have evaporated, with Obama now leading in at least some polls in all of these states.  Both Missouri and Virginia remain competitive.  The electoral votes of  any one of these five states is probably enough to put Obama over the top and make him the 44th president of the United States.  The McCain campaign is likely to take the advice of GOP party operatives and focus on a negative anti-Obama message.

McCain sends Palin to debate boot camp

October 1, 2008
With anonymous GOP operatives expressing deep concern about their vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, John McCain has sent his running mate to debate "boot camp" at his ranch in Sedona, Arizona.  Palin is scheduled to debate Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden tomorrow night, and McCain is hoping to avoid a repeat of Palin's disastrous interview sessions with CBS's Katie Couric, which can be seen here and here.  The McCain camp appears worried despite the fact that Palin has done well in prior debates during her election contests in Alaska.  Despite the private concerns of his advisors, McCain continues his public shows of support for Palin, claiming he has consulted the Alaska governor "many times" on foreign policy issues and defending Palin's qualifications to be president.

God's wrath hits GOP
August 31, 2008
By Rob @ 10:48 a.m. The Rev. John Hagee, whom John McCain called a great spiritual leader, is fond of explaining that severe weather and its effects are God's punishment on the wicked and sinful.  If that is true, then God has sent a whopper to rain on John McCain's parade.

Hurricane Gustav is barreling down on New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, and could be worse than Hurricane Katrina, which hit almost exactly three years ago.  The Katrina disaster revealed that President Bush had placed a college friend with no experience in the field of disaster relief in charge of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.  The government's complete failure to prepare for Katrina or its aftermath revealed the Bush administration's incompetence.  Gustav's impending arrival only gives the mainstream media even more reason to revisit the Katrina story.  Where was John McCain the day Katrina hit?  Eating birthday cake with President Bush.

President Bush and Vice-President Cheney will skip the Republican National Convention this year, citing their need to deal with Hurricane Gustav.  The storm will also likely keep away the GOP governors of Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.  This many notable absences is significant alone, but also gives us reason to note the numerous GOP official that will skip John McCain's nomination either to avoid embarrassing the Republican nominee or to avoid being too closely tied to the nominee:  Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens (under indictment); Idaho Sen. Larry "Wide Stance" Craig (retiring after pleading guilty to disorderly conduct in a public restroom); California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (unwilling to leave Sacramento until a budget deal is reached); Sens. John Sununu (New Hampshire) Susan Collins (Maine) Pat Roberts (Kansas) Gordon Smith (Oregon) and Elizabeth Dole (North Carolina) are all too busy campaigning for re-election to attend.

The convention itself is going to be changed by the storm.  The GOP party bosses know that they cannot be seen celebrating on television while a natural disaster strikes.  Nor can the speakers (line-up To Be Announced due to the number of no-shows) engage in the usual political attacks under these circumstances without dooming the party's chances in November.  Turning the convention into a disaster relief telethon seems like a cute idea, but unlikely and difficult to execute with only two days to plan.  No, the convention will have to walk a tightrope of doing the necessary business and providing John McCain with a chance to make his case to the voters without looking like they are indifferent to the continued suffering of the American people.

Clearly Unqualified

August 30, 3008

By Rob @ 6:10 p.m.  The initial reviews are in on John McCain's choice for Vice-President, Alaska governor Sarah Palin, and they aren't good.  Palin, who has served less than two years as governor of the nation's least populated states, is being called "clearly unqualified" and  the "most inexperienced person on a major party ticket in modern history"  by scholars and historians who are "stunned" by McCain's choice.  An Alaska newspaper called Palin a "total beginner on national and international issues."  Bush supporters have called the selection "disrespectful to the office of the presidency."  By going with Palin, McCain has completed his transformation into the Walter Mondale of the GOP, and may suffer the same fate as Mondale this fall.  The choice is a condescending assumption that women will vote for a woman based on gender alone.  Palin's role as Hillary-voter bait was obvious from her introductory speech when she claimed to be the spiritual heir to Mondale's own running mate Geraldine Ferraro and Hillary Clinton.  Palin called Clinton a "whiner" during the Democratic contest between Clinton and Barack Obama.  Palin also completed her first flip-flop of the campaign in record time, rewriting her resume to include opposition to the "bridge to nowhere" which McCain repeatedly holds up as s symbol of wasteful government spending.  The truth is, Plain supported the project until it became a political liability, though now she is claiming she told Congress "no thanks."  The choice of Palin squandered McCain's primary argument against Obama, the lack of experience, in an act of Republican affirmative action.

McCain chooses unknown Alaska governor as running mate
August 29, 2008

By Rob @ 9:09 a.m. GOP presidential candidate John McCain has chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate.  Palin, age 44, became governor less than two years ago in 2006.  Prior to that she served as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, with a population of just 6, 715.  The selection is a a surprise move that will undermine McCain's claim that Democrat Barack Obama is too inexperienced to be President.  Palin a former Miss Wasilla, was a runner up for Miss Alaska in 1984.  Palin is under investigation for firing the Alaska's Public Safety Commissioner after the state official refused to dismiss Palin's former brother-in-law, an Alaska state trooper.  As of one month ago, Palin dismissed the Vice-Presidency because it didn't seem "productive" and admitted she didn't really know what the vice-president does:  "As for that VP talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day? I'm used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration."

McCain Panders In Pennsylvania
July 12, 2008
By Rob @ 3:46 p.m.
The year was 1999, and John McCain was getting ready for his run against George Bush for the 2000 GOP presidential nomination.  In order to raise his profile, McCain publishes a book he co-wrote called "Faith Of My Fathers."  In it, McCain tells a story of being interrogated by the Vietnamese while being held as a POW, claiming he told the interrogators the names of the offensive line for the Green Bay Packers and said they were his squad mates.  But in 2008, while campaigning in Pennsylvania, the story suddenly changed, and now the football team in question has become the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Would John McCain change the details of stories he tells of his POW days just to pander for votes?  Looks that way.  Watch it here on BEtv!
